They are heavier built and (again in my opinion) easier to operate. Most all have a power X and Y feed, with the power Z feed being optional. My first choice for a vertical mill was a Tree 2UVR.

We have a Tree mill at work. Everybody else hates it because they can't get the tools to stay in. I love the machine, I'm one of the few that can use it w/o trouble. Heck, I like it so much I bought one for my home shop. I think they are just like any other machine. Ya just gotta find that sweet spot for it.
